Whether it’s braces or Invisalign, we want to make sure all our patients are on the path to a healthy smile. We also strive to provide an atmosphere that’s friendly and inviting for our patients. We understand that the first visit to an orthodontist can be an intimidating thing for some people. Don’t worry though; it’s a simple process not unlike visiting a dentist. For your convenience, we’ve provided you with a quick rundown of what your first visit to our Chapel Hill office will be like.

Preparations for Your First Appointment

You should be prepared to spend at least an hour with us for your first visit. The reason for this is so there’s no hurry and you will have a chance to ask any questions that are on your mind. When you come in, you’ll have to meet with one of our receptionists and fill out some information. You may have a short wait, but after that, your appointment will begin.

Our Procedure for Your Appointment

Our procedure is used to figure out what treatment will be needed to correct any problems and how soon they need to be performed. The process generally follows these steps:

  • First, we’ll take a set of photos of your teeth in their current state.
  • After that, we’ll take a series of x-rays. These x-rays allow us to see the position and growth of bones, joints, and teeth that have yet to erupt.
  • If necessary, we will take an impression of your teeth. This allows us to make a replica of your bite. To do this, we will ask you to bite down on a soft putty-like material for a bit. When we remove it, we can make the mold.
  • Finally, we will perform the exam. We will examine your mouth, look at your records and images, and ask questions about your dental health. This will allow us to make a proper diagnosis and create a final treatment plan.

What We’ll Discuss After Our Exam

After the exam, we’ll discuss whether you’ll need treatment. You may be completely fine, but it’s also possible we may need to recommend you to begin orthodontic treatment now or at a later date. Usually, we’ll just ask you to return for a periodic checkup until we determine that it’s the appropriate time to start.

If we decide that you need treatment, this will be the perfect opportunity to ask us about any questions that arise. Don’t hesitate to ask us about our orthodontic treatments like braces or Invisalign, their procedure, how long they’ll take, or anything else that will help clarify the situation for you. We want you to leave our office with the best possible understanding of how to achieve your optimal dental and orthodontic health.
