That's why we're proud to offer a combination of high-quality orthodontic and pediatric dental services, providing everything your child needs to develop a gorgeous smile. Achieving that smile takes more than just in-office care, though – equally important is the care you provide at home, and it all starts with brushing and flossing.

Brushing teeth is one of the cornerstones of an effective oral hygiene regimen, and starting the brushing habit early will help your child keep their smile healthy for years to come. When you brush, you should hold the brush at an angle to the teeth pointed towards the gum line and move it in a tight circular motion to dislodge food particles around the teeth and gums. Be sure to thoroughly brush every surface of the teeth, the tongue, and the roof of your mouth. If you're thorough, the process should take several minutes.

To safeguard the health of your teeth and smile, you should brush four times every day:

  • After breakfast

  • After lunch (or after school)

  • After dinner

  • Before bed

Be careful to avoid swallowing toothpaste when brushing, and change your brush every few months or as soon as the bristles start to wear.

While brushing is critical, no oral hygiene regimen is complete without flossing. Dental floss helps to reach areas of the teeth that a brush just can't get to, protecting sensitive areas from cavities and decay. You should floss your teeth at least once a day, and proper technique is critical to ensuring efficacy.

To floss your teeth, pull about 18" of floss out of the dispenser and wrap them tightly around your middle fingers. Using your index fingers to get the floss tight, gently guide it down between the teeth all the way to the gumline, sliding it up and down the teeth several times. Once finished, unwrap the floss and repeat the process using a new section of floss. When you finish, you should have used the entire piece of floss end to end.

The best time to floss is at night, right before you go to sleep. It's normal for gums to bleed a little when you first start flossing, but if this doesn't subside within a few days, let us know.
